The Incredible World of the Antarctic

Antarctica, magnificent in its beauty and unmerciful in its brutality, is a land unto itself. Man has never made war on this continent, which makes it unique. And yet here, in a land mass greater than Europe and America together, more men have died violently than naturally since the never-ending cold makes it virtually germ-free.

Nowadays, Antarctica is a haven of scientific research and international detente, as scientists from all over the world, regardless of political relations, gather in their heated buildings in the ice cold continent and work together. Since the horrendous cold of Antarctica makes their bodies lose calories at an alarming rate, those living in Antarctica are forced to eat four generous meals a day just to keep up.

Also, a special type of illness called the "Big Eye" afflicts many of the population. Due to the long days and 3-am sunshine, many people find it very difficult to sleep. Antarctica holds claim to the most exclusive club on Earth, the "300 Degree Club." It holds claim to the cheapest and southernmost bar on the planet, located at the South Pole. Here it is possible to get a 12 year old scotch or a cognac for the same exact price and still have a huge bar tab by the time you are ready to leave. The nights are extremely long due to starting in April and staying that way until September.

Its heartland is blanketed with a 9,000-foot sheet of ice in motion, and yet geologists state that it may harbor a sufficient quantity of oil, gas and coal to heat the world. Its laws, or lack thereof, are so strange that a fugitive could not be extradited and any criminal has almost nine million square miles of terrain ranging from open spaces to mountain ranges in which to conceal himself, should he be fortunate enough to survive more than a couple of hours in the most adverse climate known on earth.

Antarctica's crime rate is the lowest of all the continents, but there are no governing statutes. It could be the spot of the perfect crime, but if anyone has been murdered, it is a crime which has not been prosecuted. You can't be extradited, and you can't be charged with anything, leaving you off the hook for whatever you may have done.

While the flags of 10 different nations are flying over this beautiful continent, there are no claims to the real estate located here. Not a single country or nation has even attempted to try and make a permanent colony here on these primal lands. Ironically, these primal lands have some of the most technologically advanced pieces of equipment.

It may be surprising to know that the people who live here, although usually only for a short period, are known to have the highest IQ per capita on the planet. Due to the many scientists who live and work there, the college degrees can often outnumber high school diplomas. Not only does it have more talented scientists than most universities, it continues to be the center of more peaceful R & D studies than most world capitals. Unlike any other land mass in the world, no nuclear experiments of any kind can take place on this continent.

There are no other continents with stricter laws of conservation. Specific licensing is necessary to harvest animals which were subject to slaughter a brief century past by whalers and sealers. Antarctica is home to the scientific motherlode: a strictly peaceful place to perform scientific research that benefits all of us.
