Antioxidant Powers of Grape Seed Powdered Extract
The benefits of the extract from grape seeds were only discovered around the end of the 20th century. Before this important discovery, the only way to combat free radicals from accumulating in the body was to absorb as much antioxidants which include vitamins C, E and beta carotene. However, these mentioned substances could not be absorbed by the body for long periods of time since these are expelled as quickly as they are absorbed. Instead, ingestion of grape seed powdered extract allows the body to absorb the needed nutrients for a longer period of time wherein it is noted that the extract stays in the system for several days. It is a fact that this natural extract is 20 times more effective compared than vitamin C and 50 times greater than that of vitamin E.
Grape seed powdered extract is also a great source of polyphenols. These substances are helpful in combating heart disease, as well as reduce the levels of bad cholesterol. Polyphenols are also helpful in combating cancer thus, reducing the production and reproduction of cancer cells and even HIV cells.
The extract from grape seeds can be used in producing grape seed oil or as a raw material in powder form packed into capsules. Although there have been no proven side effects associated with taking supplements containing grape seed powdered extract, they should be avoided completely when taking blood thinners and when an individual has an allergic reaction to grapes. A few possible side effects may include a feeling of lightheadedness, vomiting and may also alter the efficacy of drugs intended to lower cholesterol levels. As with taking any supplements, it is best to first seek the advice of a health care professional to initially determine its suitability with one’s current condition.
According to some studies, it is suggested that individuals take a daily dose of supplement containing grape seed powdered extract between 50mg to 200mg depending on one’s age. Debasis Bagchi, a specialist involved in the research of grape seed extract, suggests that individuals between the ages of 30 and 40 years old should take 50mg daily doses; those between the ages of 40 and 50, 100mg and 200mg for individuals over 50 years old.
